Jack Farren

26/10/2007

EX-CHAIRMAN of the former Clayton-le-Moors Council, Mr John (Jack) Farren, has died on holiday in Spain following a short illness aged 88.

Mr Farren, of Sparth Road, Clayton-le-Moors, had an apartment in Spain and visited there regularly, usually between three and four times a year.

Born in Blackburn, he began his working life as a toolmaker at Presspart, where he stayed for many years before moving to the Royal Ordnance Factory at Blackburn.

During World War Two he served with the Royal Engineers abroad and was in France at the time of the Dunkirk evacuations.

He served as a councillor in Clayton-le-Moors for many years, becoming chairman in the late 1960s, and he was also a staunch supporter of the town’s Youth and Community Centre on Moor Street.

He was also a keen Blackburn Rovers supporter.

His daughter-in-law Vivien said: “His main interest was his community work but he also loved to go walking and he used to walk for miles. He was also keen on swimming and would often do 20 to 30 lengths each time he visited a pool.

“He was very outgoing and he had a lot of friends both here and in Spain. He always used to say ‘I’m a lucky fella’ when talking about his life.

“He was also devoted to his grandchildren and he would always remember their birthdays.”

Mr Farren was the husband of the late Vera. As well as Vivien, he leaves children Alan, Anne and Gillian, sons-in-law Eian and Peter, grandchildren Mark, Laura, Leena, Susanne, Emily and Catherine, great-grandchildren Sarah, Melissa, Ruby, Tilly and Jack, a brother-in-law Jack and a sister-in-law Betty.

He was also a dear friend to Jeanette.

Cremation took place in Spain.
