Edward Barnes

A MEMBER of Great Harwood Male Voice Choir for 40 years, Mr Edward (Ted) Barnes, of Durham Drive, Oswaldtwistle, has died in the Royal Blackburn Hospital at the age of 79.

Mr Barnes, who was married to his wife Irene for 54 years, was passionate about singing and in the 1970s sang on the club circuit with his wife.

Ill health forced him to give up but he continued to sing for pensioners’ groups, churches, disabled groups and old folk’s homes for the rest of his life.

He even sang a couple of duets in September at a meeting of Hyndburn Arthritis Care, of which he had been a member for 27 years, 12 years of them as chairman.

He was also a member of the Inskip League of Friendship and a member of Rhyddings Methodist Church for 10 years.

From the time he got his driving licence,  he loved motorcycling, repairing bikes for himself and friends.

He always loved to be out and about, his favourite place being the Lake District, but he also liked long trips to the countryside or the coast.

Even after a stroke 10 years ago, driving was still something that he could do well.

In his working life he was a plumber at Howard and Bullough for three years and Mullards for 27 years.

He will be remembered as a man who was always smiling. His friends admired his courage.

Whenever asked how he was he replied: “I’m fine thank you’’, as an example of his positive fight against adversity.

He had many cousins, nephews and nieces.

He will be cremated at Accrington on Wednesday following a service at Rhyddings Methodist Church, Oswaldtwistle, conducted by the Rev Christine Leech.
