Margaret Hayes

FLORIST Mrs Margaret Cecilia Hayes of Ascot Way, Accrington, has died at Longworth House, Ramsgreave, Blackburn, aged 94.
She and her late husband George (known as Pat) ran a florist’s stall, firstly on Accrington’s outside open market and much later in the indoor market for a more than 60 years.
Her parents, the Furey family, who were well known fruit and vegetable suppliers in Accrington many years ago, were the first local fruiterers to own a motorised delivery vehicle.
They would travel regularly to Liverpool docks to collect their supplies and were the first business to introduce bananas to Accrington Market.
A member of St Anne’s Ladies, Mrs Hayes was a lifelong member of St Anne’s RC Church and enjoyed gardening, holidays abroad and cruises, travelling to New York on the Queen Elizabeth 1.
She leaves sons Terry and Michael and was also a mother-in-law and grandma.
She was due to be buried at Accrington yesterday (Thursday) following a service at St Paul’s Church, Accrington, conducted by Father Seamus Quigley.
