Jennie Stockley
4/ 8/2008
BALLOONS were the order of the day at the funeral of retired fashion lecturer Mrs Jennie Stockley who died in the East Lancashire Hospice at the age of 83.
The wife of the late Derek and sister of Frank and the late Arthur, Mrs Stockley leaves sons Nigel and Russell, daughter-in-law Lynda and grandchildren Geoff, Paul and Nicola.
Mrs Stockley. formerly of Talbot Road, Accrington, made many friends while lecturing at Accrington College of Further Education where she worked until her retirement in 1986.
Born in Blackpool, she began her working life at John Blake’s in Clayton-le-Moors at the age of 14 after leaving All Saints School.
Then she worked at Courtaulds and began teaching dressmaking at night classes at the old Accrington Grammar School and Hyndburn Park School.
Knitting and collecting thimbles were Mrs Stockley’s main hobbies as well as babysitting her grandchildren in their younger days.
Following an operation to remove a kidney last year, she made a speedy recovery, but just weeks after being given the all-clear she was diagnosed with cancer of the brain in April.
Although she was a judge at the Clayton Flower Show for many years, Mrs Stockley didn’t like flowers and requested balloons instead at her funeral.
Friends and family released the balloons, containing memories of Mrs Stockley, into the atmosphere after her cremation at Accrington on Thursday 31 July. Father David Lyon conducted the service.
