Gerald Jardine

A D-DAY veteran known as a member of ‘The Summer Wine Gang’ at the Crown Inn, Mr Gerald Townend Jardine, has died aged 85 at the Royal Blackburn Hospital.
Mr Jardine, of Talbot Road, Accrington, enjoyed having a pint and a game of dominos with his pals Jack, Tony and Jeff.
Married to the late Betty Jardine, he was in the Merchant Navy from 1941 to 1946, taking part in the D-Day invasion. He joined the services after leaving Accrington Grammar School and served on several ships as a gunner. The ships included the Rayleigh, Drake and King George V.
He began working for J W Bridges which was founded by his father, A B Jardine and J W Bridge and was dissolved in 1964.
Mr Jardine then began trading at The Pottery Shop in Little Blackburn Road, Accrington, in 1965 and worked with the help of his family until his retirement in 1987.
He enjoyed gardening and caravanning.
He leaves children Alex, Anne and Lesley, son-in-law Michael, daughter-in-law Jill, grandchildren Matthew, Anna, William, Sarah and Lucy and great grandchildren Jacob, Jessica, Alicia and Callum.
He was due to be cremated on Friday at Accrington Crematorium following a service conducted by Father Lawrence Carson-Featham.
