Mary Wallace
22/ 8/2008
A WOMAN who received a medal and certificate of thanks from the Prime Minister for her work with the Land Army during the last war has died in the Royal Blackburn Hospital.
Mrs Mary Wallace, known as Molly, who lived in the Riverside Nursing Home, Sawley, was 85.
She left school at the age of 14 to work at Highams Mill in Accrington and later moved to Courtaulds, Clayton-le-Moors, where she met her late husband James through a keen interest in cycling.
After the war the family emigrated to Australia, returning seven years later with three children who had been born Down Under.
The couple then devoted their lives to raising their six children, Peter, Catherine, John, Alison, Andrew and Iain, and had a lifelong interest in nature and animals.
Mrs Wallace will be buried at Brocklands Woodland Burial site at Rathmell near Settle on 1 September according to her wish to give something back to nature. A tree will be planted over her grave instead of the traditional headstone.
