Catherine Johnson

FORMER mill and munitions worker Mrs Catherine (Kitty) Johnson has died in Mill Lodge, Belmont Road, Great Harwood, at the age of 87.
The wife of the late Vernon, Mrs Johnson formerly lived in Stanley Street, Accrington.
She began her working life in cotton mills and on munitions, later moving to Howard and Bullough. In her younger days she followed Accrington Stanley and scored for local cricket teams where her husband played.
She was seriously injured in a train crash in Singleton in 1961, resulting in the loss of her knee which left her with a stiffened leg.
Mrs Johnson was a member of several working men’s clubs in both Accrington and Blackpool where she enjoyed many family holidays.
She attended St Anne’s Church, Accrington, until moving to Great Harwood three years ago and was involved with Spring Hill Car Club, of which her husband was president, for many years.
They enjoyed country runs and organised social events, including trips to the Queen’s Hotel in Black-pool.
She leaves children Carol and Stephen, son-in-law Jim, daughter-in-law Valerie, grandchildren Nicholas, Maria, Heather and Hazel and great-grandson Matthew.
She was due to be buried at Accrington Cemetery on Thursday 28 August following a service at St Wulstan’s RC Church, Great Harwood, conducted by Father Anthony Clarke.
