Maimu Sweeting

1/ 9/2008

A WOMAN from Estonia who made her home in Accrington has died at the age of 80.

Mrs Maimu Sweeting died at her home in Thorneyholme Road, Accrington.

She was two years old when her mother died and she lost her father and only brother in the Second World War.

She came to England in 1947 and worked at Fairfield (Jericho) Hospital, Bury, as a nursing auxiliary. She married her policeman husband Tom in January 1952.

The pair came to live in Accrington in 1960 and Mrs Sweeting worked as a nursing auxiliary at Accrington Victoria Hospital on MS1 for 30 years.

She was unable to return to her homeland for 44 years until Estonia gained its independence in 1991 but after that she and her husband returned every year to visit her long-lost relatives.

She enjoyed gardening and entertaining and made many lifelong friends along the way.

Her hobbies included badminton, sewing, cooking and all sports.

She leaves her husband, sisters-in-law Honor, Patricia and Cathie, nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and many relatives in Estonia, some of whom will be attending the funeral.

Requiem Mass was celebrated by Father Martin Saunders at St Joseph’s RC Church, Accrington, on Friday 29 August followed by burial at Accrington Cemetery.

Arrangements: Hyndburn Funeral Services.
