William Pearce

KEEN angler Mr William Pearce of Stanhill Village, Oswaldtwistle, has died in the Royal Blackburn Hospital at the age of 62.

Married to Irene, he worked at Phillips, formerly Mullards, for 40 years. Following his retirement at the end of January, he worked as a laboratory technician for his son-in-law at Specsavers in Chorley.

He ran Blackburn Junior Fishing Club for many years with his friends John and Roy and loved teaching children to fish and organising their matches.

In addition, he was an Amalgamated Engineering Union branch secretary for 20 years and a JP for the same length of time. He was also a Labour councillor in Blackburn for a number of years.

In his younger days, he was a keen footballer, playing in goal with his brother Bernard in defence. The highlight of his footballing days was winning the Orphanage Cup at Ewood Park in 1970.

Mr Pearce loved his holidays and had travelled all over the world with his wife. He travelled to Ireland each year to fish with his son Stuart and relax with his wife.

Saturday evenings were spent in Stanhill WMC. He was a very active man who spent many hours walking his dog.

He leaves children Stuart, Katherine and Martyn, in-laws Joanne, Ed and Sasha and grandchildren Julian, Joseph, Ellie, Megan and Darcy. He also leaves a brother Bernard and sister-in-law Anita.

Requiem Mass will be celebrated at St Mary’s RC Church, Oswaldtwistle, on Tuesday 9 September by Father John Daly following by burial at Pleasington.
