Martha Solomons

A WOMAN who took over the role of verger at Christ Church, Accrington, following the death of her husband has died aged 84 at the Royal Blackburn Hospital.

Mrs Martha (Margaret) Alice Solomons, of Grafton Avenue, Baxenden, had worshipped at St John’s Church, Baxenden, until ill health prevented her from doing so.

She previously went to Christ Church where her first husband, George Leach, was the verger during the ministry of the Rev George Storey.

After her husband died she became the verger, continuing in the time of the Rev John Stockwell. She had also been a member of the choir at Christ Church.

The wife of Ted, Mrs Solomons attended Peel Park School and trained as a cotton weaver. During the Second World War she was employed weaving material for use in parachutes.

In her younger days she went ballroom dancing with her elder sister Nellie, at both Baxenden and Accrington Conservative Clubs.

She worked in Accrington Market Hall on the Co-op bread and cake stall and then for many years for Tipping’s Groceries on Abbey Street and later Marriott’s cooked meats.

She enjoyed sewing and knitting, was an avid reader of romantic fiction and before ill health, she enjoyed going to bingo clubs.

The sister of Sarah, Nellie and Arnold, she also leaves children Valerie, Elsie, Anthony, Angela, Christine, Jeanette and George, children-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great- great-grandchildren.

She will be cremated at Accrington on Friday 12 September following a service at Christ Church.
