Queenie Smith

FORMER slipper worker Mrs Queenie Smith, of Alice Street, Oswaldtwistle, has died at her home at the age of 87.

After leaving school Mrs Smith was employed at Hirsts slipper works in Waterfoot until the start of the Second World War.

During the war, she worked at ICI manufacturing aircraft parts. From 1949 she was self-employed as a shopkeeper, running the Mace Store in Oswaldtwistle with her late husband Harry until retirement in 1981.

Mrs Smith had connections with Holy Trinity Church in Oswaldtwistle and her hobbies included knitting, doing crosswords, entering competitions and spending time with her family.

She leaves a daughter Barbara, son-in-law Brian, grandson Anthony, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

A service will be held at Holy Trinity Church, Oswaldtwistle, on Tuesday 16 September, conducted by the Rev John Taylor, followed by cremation at Accrington.
