A FAMILIAR figure in Clayton-le-Moors with her guide dog, Mrs Edna Moorhouse, has died aged 88 in The Hollies Nursing Home, Church Street, Clayton.
A keen walker up to last year, she trained with her last guide dog, Maxie, at the age of 82 and this enabled her to remain independent.
She worked the dog most days right up to June 2007 when she fell and broke her hip. Maxie has now been reunited with her puppy walkers and has retired to the Peak District.
The wife of the late Arthur, Mrs Moorhouse had been employed at Mill Hill workshop, Blackburn, as a sewing machinist and previously at the Institute for the Blind in Bank Street, Accrington, as a knitting machinist for 25 years.
She was a member of All Saints Mothers’ Union,Clayton, for 40 years and was a long-serving member of Accrington Blind Society, being its first female chairperson.
A regular churchgoer, she was a keen ballroom dancer at the social club for the blind where she was also captain of both the domino and whist teams.
She leaves daughter Hazel, son-in-law Dave and granddaughters Charlotte and Emily.
Mrs Moorhouse is due to be cremated at Accrington today (Friday) following a service at All Saints Church conducted by the Rev John Tranter.
