A gang of men involved in a brawl have been sentenced for their parts in a ‘cowardly and unprovoked attack’.

Six men were arrested following the incident on Victoria Street, Accrington, on February 4 last year.

The Crown Prosecution Service said three cars pulled up and there was a ‘physical altercation’
following a verbal altercation.

Wahid Hussain, 25, was previously jailed for two months after admitting his part in the disorder.

Hussain, of Richmond Road, Accrington, pleaded guilty to a Section 4 public order offence incident at Burnley Crown Court in January.

This week Waqar Mohammed Younis, 24, of Nuttall Street, Accrington, was given an eight-month prison sentence suspended for 12 months after pleading guilty to  assault by beating and a Section 4 public order offence.

Zahid Hussain, 23, of Richmond Road, Acccrington, was also spared jail after pleading guilty to a Section 4 public order offence.

He was handed a 20-week prison sentence suspended for 12 months.

Daoud Rafiq, 18, of Pendle Street; Zohib Rafiq, 25, of Willows Lane, and Soaib Khan, 23, of Fountain Street, all Accrington, all pleaded guilty to a Section 4 public order offence.

They were each given a 12-month community order and must carry  out 60 hours unpaid work.

Speaking after the hearing, Detective Constable John Banks, of Hyndburn CID, welcomed the result.

He added: “I am pleased these men have admitted the part they played in this cowardly and  unprovoked attack in full view of the  public.

“Those who behave in this manner will be brought before the courts and punished for their actions.”
