The army has been called in by police after a dog walker found what appeared to be an unexploded World War 2 Mortar Shell.

Police said the discovery was made in a very old Army bag on land at Whin Isle Farm, Blackburn Road, Clayton-le-Moors.

A spokesman said the dog walker rang police at 12.40pm today and a patrol attended before informing the British Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Regiment, based in Chester.
