A Talented young musician has been inspired to carve out a career as a solo artist following the death of her beloved father.

Nicole Flanagan’s dad Stephen passed away from a brain tumour when she was just 10 years old.

The former Mount Carmel High School pupil, now 19, said she feels her father is ‘looking over her’ as she tries to succeed in the industry.

Nicole, of Manchester Road, Baxenden, said: “It was my dad who first put a guitar in my hands when I was nine. Unfortunately my dad died when I was 10. He had a brain tumour but he also caught pneumonia and passed away.

“I have written a song for him called ‘Sweet Melody’ and this is my favourite song which I love singing.”

Nicole, who is now a music student at Blackburn College, won the Most Improved Student award at the College’s Creative Art Awards.

Howard Sharples, centre head of creative arts and construction at Blackburn College, said Nicole is a ‘great example’ to other students.
