A couple celebrating 60 years of marriage are heading to Blackpool to mark the occasion.

Mary and Victor Knight, from Clayton-le-Moors, were married in Blackburn on February 7 1953.

The couple, now 79, are celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary with a break to Blackpool with their youngster daughter Mandy and her partner.

Mary, who is originally from Clayton-le-Moors, said they were happy to have reached the landmark.

She said: “We’ve been together quite a few years now. We had to get married quick before Victor went to do his national service. He was in the army and I only saw him once then in two years.”

The couple lived in Shropshire for a few years but have spent most of their lives in Clayton-le-Moors.

They have five children, 29 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and have just become great-great-grandparents with the arrival of baby Savannah in July.

Mary said usually they have big family celebrations for anniversaries but were looking forward to spending a few relaxing days away.

She said there were no secrets to a long and happy marriage.

She added: “We do fight but we always kiss and make up afterwards which is important.”

Mary added that the pair have always had different hobbies with Victor enjoying gardening and playing pool and her being an indoor-type of person.

She previously worked for Braak Vond in Great Harwood and Victor retired from Riley’s Chemicals.

Their daughter Mandy fundraises for Help For Heroes after her son Jason was killed in Afghanistan.

She said she wanted to take her parents to the Metropole hotel in Blackpool just to say thanks for being mum and dad.
