Councillors have dismissed the idea of a county-wide combined authority.

The proposed authority would involve each of Lancashire’s councils retaining their local identities and services, while working together on specific issues including transport, regeneration and economy.

At the latest meeting of Hyndburn council, Conservative, Labour and Independent councillors were united in dismissing the idea.

Conservative group leader Coun Peter Britcliffe said: “We want Hyndburn to remain Hyndburn.

“I don’t want to see the end of the council which would become swamped by another authority if this were to go ahead.”

Independent councillor Nick Collingridge said that Hyndburn had a good financial base which could be lost if subsumed into a wider combined authority.

Labour council leader Coun Miles Parkinson said: “I am in general agreement.”
