A discarded cigarette ignited a sofa and caused severe damage to a cottage.

Firefighters were called to Pot House Lane in Oswaldtwistle and found an upstairs room on fire in a cottage next to a farm.

Four firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus, entered the property with two hose reels to put out the blaze which caused severe damage to the room and partial smoke damage to a hallway at the top of the stairs.

Lee Cook, watch manager at Hyndburn fire station, said they were called shortly before 7pm on Wednesday, April 29 and were at the scene for around 80 minutes.

He said: “We believe the fire to have been started accidentally either by a discarded cigarette or a lighter.

"The occupiers, a male and female in their late 40s, called the fire service and everyone was out safe and well when we arrived.”

Mr Cook said the cottage was not fitted with smoke alarms and urged smokers to take extra care when discarding cigarettes and lighters.

He said: “If you are smoking make sure you put the cigarette down in a ceramic ash tray and if you are using a lighter make sure the flame has gone out before putting it down.”
