There is just over a week left to get your nominations in to find the sporting heroes of the borough.

Nominations for the Hyndburn Community Sports Awards, aiming to recognise the brightest and best from the world of sport, close on Monday, June 20.

The annual awards are organised by the Hyndburn Leisure Trust.

Sally Woods, who was named Adult Volunteer of the Year at last year’s awards ceremony for her work with running group Ossy Joggers at Rhyddings Park, Oswaldtwistle is encouraging people to nominate the best of the borough.

She said: “It was a complete and utter shock for me as I had been nominated by the runners from the group at Rhyddings Park, it was really lovely. Since winning the award last year the group has gone from strength to strength.

“It’s been the best year yet. We’re getting between 40 and 50 people coming from the couch to 5k, walking and running groups and it is continuing to grow.

“We’ve got five people going through the Running Leader course as well so they will be able to lead their own groups.”

Entering its 13th year, the Hyndburn Community Sports Awards are a celebration of local sporting achievements from athletes, coaches, volunteers, teams, clubs and schools across Hyndburn, organised by Hyndburn Leisure.

This year’s event will be held at 7pm on Friday, September 23 at Accrington Town Hall, and tickets are available.

The nominations are now open, and categories for this year’s awards include Adult Volunteer of the Year, Coach of the Year, Volunteer of The Year, Community Club of The Year, Lifetime Achievement Award, Primary School of The Year, Secondary School of The Year, the Inspire Award, Service to Disability Sport and Team of The Year.

Steve Tanti, of Hyndburn Leisure, said: “We want as many people as possible to get involved. If you know an individual, team, club or school that you think deserves to be recognised for their sporting effort, dedication or achievements, please nominate them for this year’s awards.”
