A male driver has died in a road collision this morning after a suspected heart attack.

The driver of a Vauxhall Corsa was involved in the collision on Whalley Road in Accrington outside The Grey Horse.

Duty inspector Des Barr said local CCTV taken from the scene showed the car colliding ‘very slowly’ with a set of railings and is believed to have been caused by a heart attack.

The incident happened at around 5.30am and no other cars were involved.

Officers closed the road for around two hours from the junction with Accrington Victoria Hospital to the roundabout at Ribblesdale Avenue.

The road has now been reopened.

Angela Stone, of The Grey Horse pub, said: “I’m not sure what happened. I didn’t hear anything at all until the police came.

“They asked if they could look at our CCTV and said they would be back later to collect it.”

Another local shop owner said: “We got here about 7.30am and the road was all taped off.”
