Firefighters in Hyndburn were called out to 20 incidents on Bonfire Night and were also targeted by youths throwing fireworks.

A mini-van was deliberately torched near the youth centre on Harvey Street in Oswaldtwistle.

Fire crews arrived on the scene at around 8.50pm on Tuesday, November 5 and found the Peugeot van ablaze.

The incident is being treated as arson.

Officers were also called to other bonfires across Hyndburn including:

John Street, Clayton-le-Moors at 6.15pm

Parker Street, Oswaldtwistle at 6.30pm

Fountain Street, Accrington at 8.30pm

Stanhill Lane, Oswaldtwistle at 10pm

Queensway, Church at 10.15am

Maudsley Street, Accrington at 2am

Watch manager Alex Fletcher said they were also called to other incidents in Blackburn and Darwen.

He said: “We get a lot of calls by members of the public who thing that bonfire are out of control.

“Some we put out and others we left with adult supervision.”

Youths also threw fireworks at Hyndburn officers and fire engines during a call out to a bonfire in Blackburn.

Mr Fletcher said being targeted by fireworks is now becoming 'part of the job'.

He said: “There was an incident over in Blackburn were youths were throwing fireworks at our crews who attended a bonfire there.

“No damage was caused and thankfully the crews which attended suffered no injuries. “Unfortunately it's the nature of the job now on Bonfire Night.”

Lancashire Fire and Rescue spokesman John Taylor said the incident happened on the Cedar Street area at around 8pm.

He said: “There was a bonfire out of control and Hyndburn crews were there along with Blackburn as it was a very busy night.

“There were about 150 youths and some were setting fireworks off at the crews and the fire engines and also throwing them into the bonfire.

“Firefighters had made a judgement that the fire wasn't going to get out of control or endanger life or property but by the time they had made that call they had fireworks thrown at them.”

Lancashire Police said extra officers were sent to the area and the group dispersed without incident. A number of youths were also stopped and fireworks were confiscated.
