A Great Harwood man has raised around £2,500 for a cancer charity after climbing Kilimanjaro.

Jim Donohoe, 57, took up the challenge in memory of his wife, Barbara, and sister-in-law, Marie, who both died from cancer.

It is the latest venture by the quality controller to boost the funds of Macmillan Cancer Support after he previously ran the London Marathon and walked across Scotland.

He reached Kilimanjaro’s peak on Thursday, February 6 and said it was a ‘wonderful experience’.

He said: “You can’t believe how slow you have to walk because of the lack of oxygen. The views were amazing and it was a wonderful trip.

“I was so tired at the end I slept all the way back on the plane.”

Mr Donohoe, who moved from Clayton-le-Moors this week, is considering climbing the Himalayas for his 60th birthday.

He added: “We have been involved with Macmillan for 25 years as my sister-in-law passed away aged 34. My wife picked up the mantle with me, but she also died of cancer four years ago.

“I have always wanted to climb Kilimanjaro. I paid for the trip so the money I raised all goes to charity.”
