Hyndburn has the highest proportion of food outlets in need of improvement in East Lancashire, according to food hygiene ratings.

Of the 657 premises in the district, 44 had been rated one by council inspectors, meaning major improvement is necessary, according to the ScoresOnTheDoors website.

A further four premises received the lowest rating, zero, meaning urgent improvement is necessary.

By contrast Blackburn and Darwen has just 36 out of its 1,223 premises in need of improvement, Burnley has 20 out of 804, and Rossendale and Ribble Valley both have four one ratings and no zero ratings with 598 and 595 outlets respectively.

Pendle is the district with the lowest proportion, with just five premises rated either one or zero out of 776.

Hyndburn also has 363 outlets rated 5 stars, according to the ScoresOntheDoors website.

The Scores on the Doors food ranking system shows results for all food premises inspected by council environmental health officials listed on the website.

Some, however, believe the process is unfair.

In a statement on their Facebook page, Lily Maes Coffee Bar and Bistro, which got a “1” rating, said their score was due to incorrect paperwork.

They said: “Our working practices, food hygiene and storage were all above E.H.O standards.

“We are due for our re-inspection any time, all paperwork will be back up to standards.”

Hyndburn MP Graham Jones he was worried by the number of low ratings.

He said: “Food hygiene is vital and action must be taken to improve standards.”

Councillor Paul Cox, Cabinet Minister for Environmental Health, said a vast majority of food outlets in Hyndburn rated highly.

He said: “We have a large number of premises in Hyndburn that are rated good with 506 out of 561 rated premises scoring 3 or above.

“We take food hygiene seriously and when premises are found to be lacking they are rated accordingly.

“We work with premises where we have concerns to ensure they improve, but if they fail to do so we take appropriate action, including serving notices and ultimately closing premises down if necessary.

“Our primary concern is always to protect the public from the threat of eating unsafe food.”
