Police cadets from Hyndburn have been commended at an annual awards ceremony.

Youngsters in the Hyndburn and Ribble Valley Police Cadets were named Best Group of the Year at the Lancashire YOUth 2015 awards.

Sarah Barton, of the Early Action Team, said it was a ‘great evening’ and a ‘great achievement’ for the 18-month old group.

The non-for-profit volunteer scheme is made up of youngsters aged 13 to 18 with around 25 per cent from ‘vulnerable or hard to reach backgrounds’. From August 2013 to July 2014 they completed 1,177 hours of volunteering outside their weekly meetings.

Projects include creating a school sensory path, assisting with crowd safety at Oswaldtwistle ‘Fright Night’, the Accrington Rotary bonfire and Accrington Christmas lights switch-on.

They also took part in the Great Harwood Prom in the Park, a cycling event in Clayton-le-Moors, the Accrington Freedom Parade and a sponsored litter picks at four car parks.

They have also supported local police officers with crime prevention stalls, assisting at neighbourhood events and have taken part in filming for an Educational Substance Misuse Resource aimed at young people. Sarah said: “They are the youth of today and the role models of the future.”
