Speed limit signs placed on back alleys have been branded ‘ridiculous’.

More than half a dozen 20mph restrictions have been installed on alleyways along the right hand side of Manchester Road heading out of Accrington.

Baxenden resident Stuart Gorton, 56, said he was ‘baffled’ why the signs were put there.

He said: “We thought it was ridiculous when they put them up. It’s just a complete waste of money.

“It’s not to bad for the residential streets where they will help but I can’t understand how and why they’ve put them on the back roads.

“It’s cost them time and money to put these in and if they have to move them again that will cost more.”

Ward councillor Terry Hurn claims the signs should have been placed on residential streets on the left hand side of the road instead, including Bamford Crescent and Haworth Avenue.

He said: “It’s caused quite a stir with the people in Baxenden. When you drive up and see where they have put them it looks ridiculous.

“They have put the 20mph signs on the wrong side of the road. They should be on the left but they have put them on the right. Instead of streets like Bamford Crescent and Haworth Avenue getting them they have been put on back alleys that are only 50m long.

“I am really surprised no-one has come to rectify it.”

The latest row follows complaints about an ‘idiotic’ 20mph limit on dead end alleyway Whewell Row in Oswaldtwistle, back in March.

Highways bosses at Lancashire County Council insist the signs have not been erected in the wrong place as the scheme is not yet complete.

Paul Binks, road safety manager, said: “The homes on the streets at the west side of Manchester Road fall within the 20mph area covering West Baxenden which has already been completed with the signs installed.

“Streets on the east side of the road, including Bamford Crescent and Haworth Avenue, are being covered by the separate Southwood Drive 20mph area proposal.

“This scheme is at a much earlier stage and we are currently consulting local people who have the opportunity to share their views before plans are finalised.

“No signs will be installed until this consultation is complete.”
