A great-grandad received the perfect present on his 90th birthday – a free pint for every year of his life.

The keen dominoes player enjoyed a surprise party with family and friends on Saturday.

Ronald Crook likes a couple of pints of his favourite ale at his regular, Snuffy’s Bar in Great Harwood.

Ronnie, as he is known, was given 90 free pints as a gift, which staff reckon should last him most of the year.

The former electrician, who has lived in Great Harwood since marrying his late wife Ivy 62 years ago, said he was in shock when he turned up at his local on Saturday.

He said: “It was a shock. I know Pat the owner and when I went to the pub on my birthday I knew there was something in the wind because everyone was waiting outside.

“I sometimes have two pints a day. Now I’ve received this present I might have an extra pint a day.”

He added: “I like this pub a lot, the staff are great, the ale is good and the price is right, especially at the moment!”

Ronnie’s routine involves getting the bus to the pub, having a pint and a game of dominoes with friends.

He added: “Then I get up, get back on the bus, get off and walk home.

“You can’t have it better than that.”

Around 15 people attended Ronnie’s party, including his son, grandchildren and friends.

Snuffy’s owner Pat Thompson, 59, said everyone enjoyed a few drinks, a buffet and birthday cake.

She said: “It was lovely. He had a little tear in his eye at one point. He loved the party and getting the 90-pint present.

“He was really shocked but very grateful.”

She added: “He’s been coming in here every day since I started running the pub. I love him to bits and I hope I can do what he’s doing when I’m 90.

“He’s very popular in here. He talks, laughs with people and shuts them up if he needs to!”
