AN ALLOTMENT fire has shocked a pensioner who went through a similar experience.

Len Myerscough, 75, said he was angered by arsonists who set an allotment on Alan Ramsbottom Way, Great Harwood, on fire at around 2pm on Sunday.

The blaze gutted the plot which included a shed.

Mr Myerscough, of Greaves Street, Great Harwood, suffered a similar attack around Christmas when his allotment cabin was also torched by vandals and his greenhouse smashed up.

He said: "It's getting ridiculous. It's very hard to keep security up but we do what we can.

"I don't know why people take pleasure in ruining other people's property. It isn't right."

Watch manager Ken Horrocks of Great Harwood Fire Station, who was on duty when the fire was reported, said the reason some allotments were targeted over others was that thugs get a kick out of watching buildings and other large objects burn.

He added: "There are quite a lot of allotments in the area and it depends on what is on them.

"Because there are no properties in the area, they can be easy targets."

  • THE story had a happy ending for Mr Myerscough after the town's community police officers and local companies joined together to buy him a new shed and some new tools.
