An arson investigation has started after a derelict mill in Oswaldtwistle was set alight yesterday.

Two fire crews spent almost two hours putting the fire out and dampening the building down in Stonebridge Lane.

John Taylor, of Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "We got a call at 5.30pm on Wednesday, September 7 saying there was smoke coming from a factory. It wasn’t a huge blaze so damage was limited. But the main issue was that the Hyndburn crews had to break in because it was locked up.

"When in they found a small fire and put it out using a hose reel. They used breathing apparatus also and tools to break in and get access. There’s a school not that far away and terraced housing. It’s near Rhyddings Street. The police have been notified."
