PEOPLE across Hyndburn stopped what they were doing to pay tribute to those servicemen and women who had given the ultimate sacrifice.

Among them were Ann Hutton, the niece of First World War veteran Netherwood Hughes, and her husband Donald Hutton.

Netherwood, known as Ned, was one of the last surviving veterans from the 1914-1918 war. He sadly passed away in April – just two months before his 109th birthday.

The couple attended the Remembrance service last Sunday at Great Harwood, and Donald said he would be observing the silence at home on Wednesday, reflecting on those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

Schoolchildren across the borough also took part in the two minutes silence, including pupils from St Oswalds Primary School in Knuzden. Pupils in year six also helped the headteacher play the Last Post as they paid their respects.

Meanwhile at Accrington Town Hall the Mayor, Councillor Paul Barton, the Leader, Councillor Peter Britcliffe, and members of the Royal British Legion also fell silent as they reflected on Remembrance Day.
