A seven-year-old cyclist was knocked from his pedal bike in Oswaldwtistle after a passing van collided with him.

The youngster bumped his head on the road during the accident which happened on White Ash Lane at 2pm on New Year's Eve.

Police said the boy was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital where he was treated for a head injury, but soon released.

Road traffic Sgt Pete Schulpher, of Accrington Police, said: "The incident was accidental. The seven-year-old has received a bit of a bang to his head after a collision with a silver transit van on White Ash Lane in Oswaldtwistle.

"It is not a main through road and it is an area where you would expect young children to use their bikes as it is a housing estate. There has been a collision and I'm glad to say the youngster is OK."
