ACCRINGTON Stanley players Ian Dunbavin and Bobby Grant have apologised after being involved in a nightclub brawl in Southport.

Dunbavin and Grant, along with four others, both pleaded guilty to affray at Liverpool Crown Court and and were given a 18 week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, and ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work.

England and Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard was cleared of affray in a trial last month.

"I would like to take this opportunity to apologise on behalf of Robert Grant and myself, Ian Dunbavin," siad Stanley keeper Dunbavin.

"We would firstly like to apologise to Accrington Stanley FC and the fans for the negative publicity our case has generated.

"We would extend that to all the club's sponsors, including our major sponsor Combined Stabilisation, and to Hyndburn Council and anyone else connected with the club and the area.

"We would like to thank all the people who have supported us through this sorry time including our fellow players, the management, the staff and the fans.

"We are both deeply sorry for our actions and would like to put it behind us and, with everybody's help, be a part of a successful season for Accrington Stanley."
