POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a vulnerable pensioner had a substantial sum of money stolen from her home in Great Harwood.

The 89-year-old woman, of Worston Lane, was in her home shortly after 5pm on Saturday when a man smashed his way through the back door with a spade taken from her shed.

The thief then raided the victim’s home, stealing a large quantity of cash.

Before the incident a number of businesses canvassed the area and police are keen to talk to anyone who can remember anyone acting suspiciously during this time.

Police believe the man was wearing some sort of fluorescent clothing, possibly a workman’s overall.

Sergeant Stuart Banks, of Great Harwood Police, said: "This offender is despicable, preying on an elderly and vulnerable victim. We are very concerned about this type of crime and want to apprehend the offender as soon as possible. I urge anyone with information on the whereabouts of this offender to contact us."

Anyone with information should contact Great Harwood Police on 0845 125 3545 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555,111.
