STAFF at the Observer cracked open the bubbly to celebrate a dramatic rise in circulation.

A recent edition crashed through the 14,000 mark for the first time in a decade-and-a-half. And another fell just a few copies short of that mark.

Our total January sale was up nearly six per cent to an average 13,584. Circulation has been rising steadily for the past two or three years and this accelerated following our bright new redesign.

Delighted Group Editor Richard Catlow provided the champagne.

And Editor Mervyn Kay said: "We're through a psychological barrier and now we're aiming at sales of over 14,000 every week. We've a great team of journalists and morale is sky-high.''

  • Our great new website has had around 5,000 "hits'' since its launch less than a fortnight ago. Up to 230 people a day have been visiting the site which is crammed with news, features and information about Hyndburn.
