A PROPERTY developer said he is still keen to develop a historic Accrington building despite suggestions he has lost his enthusiasm.

Ifta Kharual Bhatti said he is still committed to refurbishing the Accrington Conservative Club on Eagle Street even though it has been a year since the original plans were first announced.

Last year Mr Bhatti, of Burnley-based Woodgreen Properties, unveiled plans to transform the Grade II listed building a multi-use complex with a glass atrium, offices, a restaurant, a rooftop cafe, two shops and a gym.

However works have not begun and Labour Councillor Graham Jones has accused Mr Bhatti of losing his enthusiasm for the project.

Councillor Jones said: "He is not as enthusiastic as he first was. It is disappointing when someone comes in and they are keen and we find out 12 months later they are not as keen as they promised.

"If the current developer can’t do it we should get someone else."

But Mr Bhatti said he is just as eager as ever to refurbish the site.

Mr Bhatti said: "We are committed to refurbishing the building. Our plans include restoring the ballroom to its former glory and two floors of offices. The basement will be turned into a bistro or restaurant.

"The exterior of the building will be repaired over the next four months and next year work will begin internally."

He added: "We will be refurbishing rather than demolishing the rear of the building due to the economic climate and being unable to reach an agreement with the planners. We are trying to work closely with (Hyndburn) Council to see if there are any grants available for work to the building."
