David ‘Bumble’ Lloyd has agreed to join Accrington Stanley’s board as a non-executive director.

As one of the town’s most famous sons, Lloyd has been an unstinting supporter of both Stanley and Accrington Cricket Club for many years.

He will join current directors Ilyas Khan, Peter Marsden and Peter Shaw, and chief executive Robert Heys.

Lloyd, who now commentates on cricket for Sky said he would hope to use the new role to raise the club’s profile, especially as it searches for a new ground sponsor.

He said: "I was proud to become a shareholder last year and now look forward to assisting the board in its efforts to create a well-run, community based football club we can all be proud of.

"Ilyas has been speaking to me for some time. I’m obviously not going to be making any decisions but I have one or two ideas and hopefully I will be able to help with the profile of the club.

"One of the things we need is a stadium sponsor. I think that’s a cracking thing for any company to be involved in."

He added: "With Ilyas coming in, the finances are absolutely spot on and I think it’s very important for a community to support clubs like Stanley."

Club chairman Khan said Lloyd added to the credibility and professionalism of the club’s board in the best way possible.

"I cannot tell you how pleased I am to welcome David to Stanley’s board of directors," he said.

Lloyd, who bought a number of shares in the Reds following its share issue last year, played for Accrington Stanley before his celebrated cricket career for Lancashire and England.

The Reds will add another independent non-executive director as part of ongoing plans to expand its shareholder base.
