A Baxenden man whose son died at a Saddleworth beauty spot has completed a sponsored sky-dive in his memory.

Oliver Dixon, 20, was found dead at the foot of Wimberry Rocks at Dovestone reservoir in 2008.

His dad Richard had originally planned to take part in a skydive with Oliver, of Mossley, to celebrate his twenty-first birthday.

He said: "I have been sky-diving for five years and Oliver had always wanted to do a sky-dive with me.

"But he later changed his mind and asked if he could have the money to go away with his friends instead.

"He said we had all our lives to go sky-diving together, but sadly we never got the chance. He died just a few weeks before his twenty-first birthday."

Richard, Oliver’s brother Adam and several of his friends completed the challenge on the second anniversary of his death.

Now those closest to Oliver have completed a sponsored sky-dive on the second anniversary of his death and to say thanks to the people who brought his body home.

Richard said: "We had no refusals on the day but there were some very funny screams from certain people on exit at 14,000 ft.

"The weather during the week leading up to the event was extremely lousy and I was getting worried it would be a washout. But on the Saturday of the sky-dives it was perfect conditions and all 24 of us got to jump."

The following day they organised a charity night at the Commercial Inn, Uppermill and their efforts raised a total of £2,850 for Oldham Mountain Rescue Team, in memory of Oliver, whose bubbly personality earned him the nickname of Jolly.

Richard said: "We have raised a fantastic amount. Thanks to the Black Knights parachute centre and everyone who supported us to make it such a special day."
