Motorists suffered delays after a lorry shed three tonnes of metal sheeting.

Firefighters and police were called to the Whitebirk roundabout near the Rishton Blackburn Road exit at around 2.40pm on Monday, April 4.

Police said a pallet of steel had fallen off the lorry and was blocking two lanes.

Fire crews spent around 90 minutes at the scene and police officers were used to help divert traffic.

The road was cleared and fully reopened by 4.45pm and no injuries were reported.

A fire service spokesperson said: “Firefighters from Blackburn attended an incident on the A678 in Rishton which involved a HGV which had shed its load onto the roadway. Firefighters assisted in the removal of steel plates from the roadway and used an airbag and turfer at the scene.

“Crews were at the scene approximately one hour and 30 minutes. There were no casualties.”
