A teacher who spent his entire career at the same school is retiring after 37 years.

Deputy headteacher Trevor Ainsworth will retire from Rhyddings Business and Enterprise School this summer and said he will most miss the ‘family atmosphere’.

Trevor, 59, began his career as a history and music teacher at Rhyddings, in September 1977, and enjoyed it so much that he stayed for more than three decades.

He said: “It’s a very peculiar feeling. I’ve spent my working life surrounded by students, parents and teachers. Suddenly not to have that will leave a great big hole. But I can’t deny I’m looking forward to having some time to myself.

“That daily contact with students has been terrific. I’ve been very lucky to have my working life here and I recognise that. I have been fortunate enough to have had numerous promotions where the governors have shown confidence and faith in me.

Having spent the last five years as deputy head has been a wonderful way to end.

“I’ve had very very happy times here. I wouldn’t have stayed here so long otherwise.”

Father-of-one Trevor, from Clitheroe, will retire along with his wife Linda - a teacher at St Wilfreds, Blackburn - and the couple plan to fly to Australia to visit their son as their first trip as retirees.

Headteacher Paul Trickett said Trevor will be sorely missed by staff and students. He said: “He actually taught some of the staff now working at Rhyddings. He is, and will always remain, the face of Rhyddings.”
