Police are appealing for information following a burglary in Accrington.

Police are appealing for information following a burglary in Accrington.

A couple returned to their home on Queens Road West to find that the side door had been forced open  at around 3:30pm, on Wednesday.

As they entered the house, the retired couple were confronted by a man was coming down their stairs. The man claimed to be a police officer checking on the property however, when challenged by the male owner of the house, a struggle ensued and the victim was assaulted and suffered facial injuries and bruising.

It has since transpired that a laptop and jewellery had been taken during the incident.

Detective Inspector Ian Whitehead said, “The occupants are understandably very distressed by the incident.

“We are not ruling out the fact that there may have been more than one offender involved and we are determined to find out who is responsible.

“Incidents of this nature are rare and I believe that somebody in the local community may know who is responsible. The incident occurred at a time when there will have been parents and children in the area who were leaving the local high schools so there is a strong likelihood someone will have seen something.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact police by calling 101, alternatively, information can be passed to the independent charity, Crimestoppers anonymously by calling 0800 555 111.
