Fears are growing for a traffic cop who has gone missing. Highly-respected Pc Steve McQuade, whose duties have included being part of police escorts for royalty, has not been seen since Thursday.

He was on duty earlier this week but his disappearance is described as totally out of character.

The 42-year-old dad-of-two was last seen at 10pm on Thursday by a family friend in Barnfield Avenue, Accrington.

He has not returned to his home in Sharples, Bolton.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said Pc McQuade had contacted his family, but concern for him remained high.

Pc McQuade is 5ft 10ins tall, white, of medium build, with short dark brown hair. He is thought to be wearing blue jeans and a black coat. Police believe he may be driving a silver car, possibly a Corsa or an Astra.

He has a number of family friends in the Accrington area.

Supt Steve Nibloe said: "It is thought Steve has not been taking his medication for a medical condition. We want to hear from anyone who has seen or heard from him since Thursday.

"His family and friends are very concerned for his whereabouts so if anyone has information please call us."
