A TOP composer hit all the right notes when his latest work was played for hundreds of people at a leading music festival.

Ian Schofield, 57, was delighted when Sing Alleluiah! was performed at this year's Petersfield Festival.

The former pupil of Rhyddings High School, Oswaldtwistle, has also appeared in this month's edition of The Organ magazine, explaining more about his work.

Born in the Stanhill area of Oswaldtwistle, Ian studied music at the University of Southampton before moving to Portsmouth in 1972 where he now teaches music at the South Downs College.

This week his wife Sonia said: "Ian always enjoys composing new works and he still keeps up his links with Oswaldtwistle by visiting his parents who live there. It is part of his heritage and certainly not something he has forgotten."

Dr David Baker, who interviewed Ian for The Organ article, said: "Ian wants to do things that his audience and performers will like. His says his music has to be enjoyable even if those who perform and listen don't necessarily understand the intellectual output behind it.

"His music is being performed more regularly and he is keen to write an orchestral mass as well as a concerto for violin and viola. I always enjoy listening to his work and I hope to hear more soon."

Ian's previous work includes Te Deum, which has been performed by the Portsmouth Choral Union, and a set of three Christmas carols called Benedicamus Domino.

He has also produced performing versions of the works of composers including Rossini and Donizetti.
