Firefighters were called out to a house fire believed to have been caused by a cigarette.

A neighbour on Gloucester Avenue in Accrington rang 999 after a smoke alarm in the property was set off on Wednesday afternoon.

A spokesman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Two fire engines from Hyndburn attended a house fire in Accrington on Wednesday at 12.39pm.

“Firefighters extinguished the fire and cleared the property of smoke. There was no one in the house when firefighters arrived at the scene.

“It is believed the cause was ash from a cigarette the occupant had thought she had stubbed out falling on to the carpet and burning a small section of it.”

The spokesperson added: “We would advise residents to make sure cigarettes are fully extinguished before going to bed or going out.

“The smoke alarm in the house worked well and alerted the neighbour to ring 999.”
