Five arrests have been made after a police officer was hospitalised having being ‘run over’ by suspected burglars trying to evade police in a stolen car.

Police said the female officer suffered leg injuries requiring hospital treatment after police investigating the break in were ‘rammed’ in the early hours of this morning.

The incident happened after police were called to a house on Knowlmere Street in Accrington at around 1.20am this morning following reports of a burglary.

Police said offenders broke into a house and assaulted one of the occupants, a man in his 40s, before stealing a flat screen television and car keys to a Rover.

The car was taken from outside the house and the victim was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital with head injuries.

Patrols were then made of the area and officers soon located the Rover car on nearby Ramsbottom Street.

Police said the Rover ‘rammed’ two police cars and two police officers were knocked to the floor by the open door of the car.

The Rover then ‘ran over’ one of the female officers, causing her to suffer cuts, bruises and an injury to her leg.

She was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital for treatment, but has since been released.
