A former England footballer will be special guest at an Oswaldtwistle football club’s sportsman’s dinner.

St Mary’s Football Club is holding the event on Friday, February 1 to raise money for the club and celebrate some of its recent successes.

Kevin Gibson, secretary of St Mary’s, said everyone at the club was looking forward to the dinner, which will feature ex Southampton midfielder Matt Le Tissier.

He said: “It will be a good evening. The players are excited Matt Le Tissier has agreed to attend and celebrate with us.

“This is our biggest fundraiser of the year. Tickets have already sold out so it should be a very special night.”

The night will also feature comedian Sean Styles.

During the last year St Mary’s celebrated the opening of the new Heys Sports Complex located on land on Heron Way after five years of tireless fundraising by the club, Rhyddings Business and Enterprise School and Hippings Methodist Primary School.

The development has been funded by £571,590 from the Football Foundation, £400,000 from Lancashire County Council, £75,000 from Hyndburn council and £150,000 from the two schools and St Mary’s FC.

Kevin added: “It’s been a big year for the club.

“We normally hold cabaret evenings which have been successful before but a sportsman’s dinner seemed like a good way to celebrate this year.”
