ACCRINGTON Rugby League Club is on the losing side before the new season has even kicked off following a spate of vandalism.
Yobs have been giving groundsmen a headache by digging up the pitch at Highams Playing Fields, off Thorneyholme Road, Accrington.
In the run up to the start of the new season in September staff at the club have been carrying out general maintenance work on the pitch, making sure that it is fully prepared, but every time they make any improvements vandals ruin their efforts.
During the latest incident staff arrived at the club and were horrified to find a gang of teenagers digging trenches on the pitch.
Anthony Foley, youth development coach, said: "We have just been doing general stuff to get things ready for the start of the season in September.
"I saw a gang of kids digging away but they just ran off as soon as I arrived. They have basically dug three channels about four inches deep along the goal line.
"We have got our first match on 6 September and this needs to be ready for us to play and you can't play on it when people keep digging holes in the pitch.
"We have had problems all summer, each time we lay some top soil or do some seeding they dig it up again and we have to keep coming over and sorting it out.
"We have asked them to stay off the pitch but they have no respect at all.
"This is the only rugby pitch in the entire borough, which is why it is so important to us a club."
