New league tables have brought a mixture of joy and misery to schools.

New figures show half of Hyndburn’s schools scored improvements in their GCSE pass rates last summer.

The town’s top performing school was again Accrington St Christopher’s CE school, where 79 per cent of candidates achieved five or more GCSEs at C or above – up from 71 per cent before.

And at The Hollins Technology College, 65 per cent achieved the five grades – up from 61 per cent before.

Results also rocketed at Accrington Academy, where 47 per cent of students met the government requirement – an increase from 33 per cent.

But results slumped at the borough’s other three schools.

At Norden High and Sports College, only half of students met the requirement last year, down from 56pc before.

At Mount Carmel RC High School, results fell to 46 per cent, while only 40pc of students at Rhyddings Business and Enterprise School scored the good grades.

Across Lancashire, 60 per cent of pupils in the borough met the government standard.

Hyndburn council leader Miles Parkinson congratulated schools for their improvements but said others ‘should not be left behind’.

He said: "I’m extremely pleased – we’ve seen steady improvement in results across Hyndburn. I would like to offer my congratulations to the pupils for their dedication. This is recognition – not just for the work of the teachers but also the parents for taking part in their children’s education.

We’re outshining some areas but there’s always room for more and higher achievements.
