A TEENAGER proved she was well-versed in the art of writing after coming out tops in our fantastic poetry competition.

We launched the contest in conjunction with Sayers, part of the Hampson family of bakers and sandwich shops, which has a shop in Accrington's Arndale Centre.

We asked youngsters to write a poem on the theme of My Home Town and dozens of would-be writers responded.

Last week judges whittled the hopefuls down to the last five - and now Georgia Creig, of St Christopher's High School, Accrington, has been named as the winner by readers' votes.

Georgia, 14, of Scott Avenue, Baxenden, said: "I heard about the competition through school and I wrote some of it in school and did some at home.

"I was really surprised when I won as, although I have written poems in the past, I have never won anything before.

"I have written about animals and places I have been."

Georgia lives with her parents Paul and Jacqui and has a 21-year-old brother Ben.

Her prize for winning will be a £50 book voucher and £250 worth of book vouchers for her school.

Her poem will also be printed on Sayers bags which are distributed all over the North West.

Jacqui said: "She has done really well as English is something she really enjoys.

"She is very hard-working and motivated and we are very proud of her."
