This is Hyndburn’s busiest speed camera - which caught out more than 200 drivers last year and raised over £8,500.

The camera, on the A679, Hyndburn Road in Accrington clocked more speeding drivers than any other in the borough during 2010, according to figures released this week.

The device, which is near Hyndburn Park Primary School clocked a total of 211 speeding motorists.

Of those, 75 were fined, 59 were ordered to complete a speed awareness course, 35 were issued a court summons and 42 were cancelled.

Road safety campaigner and Altham parish councillor Rennie Pinder said: “Hyndburn Road is a very, very busy thoroughfare as it is probably the most used road in Hyndburn.

“But drivers also have to remember that a lot of pedestrians use those roads too to get to the nearby school, Asda and retail park.

“We are very fortunate that we don’t have that many road casualties in Hyndburn but I think that it goes without saying that those speed cameras are working.

“It’s not all about cameras but about educating motorists.”

Across the borough a total of 678 offences were recorded with 240 people being issued fines and 170 paying to attend speed awareness courses, raising over £25,700. This compares with 669 offences in Rossendale and 2,190 in Blackburn with Darwen.

Overall, 28,878 people were found to be speeding across Lancashire in 2010 with the highest number being recorded in Osbaldeston with 2,569 offences.

The next busiest camera is on the A680 Manchester Road near Alliance Street, Baxenden with 132 drivers caught speeding last year while the camera which caught the lowest number of drivers was on the A679 Burnley Road near Foster Street, Accrington with 11.

Tim Ashton, Lancashire County Council cabinet member for highways and transport, added: “Using cameras to target locations where speeding is an issue is just one of the ways we've been able to make our roads safer and reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured by more than 40 per cent in five years.”
