Great Harwood tip could be reopened following a change of power at the top of the county council.

Hyndburn Labour council leader Miles Parkinson said the previous Conservative administration’s decision to close the centre would be reviewed by the new ruling Labour group as one of its top priorities for Hyndburn.

New county council leader Jennifer Mein visited the tip in 2011 to lend support to the campaign to keep it open.

Coun Parkinson, who is also a county councillor said: “We will be revisiting mistakes of the Conservative administration.

“In Great Harwood we will be looking to see if there’s a social enterprise that could open the waste recycling facility.”

Labour fell four seats short of an overall majority at county hall following the  elections earlier this month, but the Liberal Democrats have now agreed to support Labour’s nomination of council leader.

Rather than forming a coalition, both parties have said decisions on how each party votes on policy matters will be made on a case by case basis.

Coun Parkinson added the county councillors would be making sure Hyndburn got its ‘fair share’ of funding from the county council.

But Conservative group leader on Hyndburn council, and county councillor Peter Britcliffe, slammed the new leadership’s plans – claiming they focus on Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale, rather than Hyndburn.

He said: “There seems to be very little in it for east Lancashire, and for Hyndburn in particular.

“Under the Conservative administration we got a new bus station.

“But I wonder what’s in it now for Hyndburn, apart from an increase in council tax.”

Coun Mein said she was pleased the Labour group had been able to form an administration.

She said: “The reductions in central grant funding will make our task more difficult, but we will ensure that we put the people of Lancashire at the heart of our plans for the future.”

County councillor Bill Winlow, leader of the Liberal Democrat group, said the new leadership agreement was “very good for the people of Lancashire and will provide a green, fair and strong economy”.
