Huncoat was mentioned in the Domesday book and the centre of the original village around the Town Gate still retains the village stocks. The cotton carding machine was invented by John Hacking in Huncoat in 1772.

Baxenden is perhaps best known as the home of the world-famous Hollands Pies. The villages is located to the south of Accrington and is a mainly residential area although many of the terraced housing was built in the eighteenth century.
